§ 28-2. Traffic calming.

Latest version.
  • Traffic calming devices are roadway design elements intended to slow or reduce motor vehicle traffic in order to enhance livability and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Types of traffic calming devices include the following:

    (1)

Speed humps. Speed humps are raised sections of pavement, constructed along a street, which cause drivers to reduce their speed.

    (2)

Chicane. A chicane is a series of two or more staggered curb extensions on alternating sides of the roadway.

    (3)

Median. Medians are raised islands placed at the center of a roadway that separate two directions of traffic.

    (4)

Roundabouts. A roundabout is a type of circular junction in which road traffic must travel in one direction around a central island. Signs usually direct traffic entering the circle to slow down and yield to drivers already in the circle.

    (5)

Traffic circle. Traffic circles are raised islands, placed at intersections, around which traffic circulates. Traffic circles prevent drivers from speeding through intersections by impeding straight-through movement and forcing drivers to slow down to yield.
